Featured Artist – Ruth Moilliet

Ruth Moilliet produces highly finished metal and glass sculptures inspired by the plant kingdom. In her work she aims to draw the viewer’s attention to both the overall spectacle and individual beauty of a flower.
Her work is inspired by her close study of a particular species and the
beautiful, intricate forms she discovers. The finished pieces and the materials used explore the apparent fragility of an individual plant contrasted with its ability to sustain existence through ongoing lifecycles. Her sculptures are predominantly made from metal but she often combines other materials such as glass and acrylic to reflect her interpretation of a particular structure.
As well as her metal sculptures she has produced two bodies of work using float glass. Originally starting with real flowers layered between glass, her more recen
t pieces use images and etchings. Each panel depicts the beauty found in a range of British wild flowers and replicates the profusion in which they can be found naturally.
Ruth’s artworks are limited editions, she has created numerous commissions and her work features in corporate and private collections both internationally and across the UK.

Featured Artist – Gerry Halpin

Gerry Halpin M.B.E., M.A.F.A is well-known locally and beyond the bounds of Lancashire for his abstract works which reflect his present artistic occupation. Essentially landscapes, in some cases from an aerial viewpoint, he explores the linear quality of ground features but seen from above with hints of the underlying texture suggested by his use of polymer based plaster relief. Other paintings reflect his preoccupation with the figure in landscape or at least the spatial relationships of figure groups. They are not portraits but anonymous groupings of
people within the environment painted from almost shorthand drawings sketched on the spot. Acrylic paint, polymer modelling paste and gold or silver leaf are the mediums which best allow him the opportunity to examine and re-present his interpretation of reality. Recent trips to Cuba and Canada have provided the main source of his inspiration for these works.
He has painted professionally since 1990 and held or shared many successful exhibitions.
In 2001 he was elected a member of Manchester Academy of Fine Art of which there are only 122 elected members and in 2005 was elected to the Academy council.
Gerry was honoured with an MBE last year for his services to art and local charities, for which he has
raised over £100,000 selling original Christmas cards depicting local scenes.
He counts himself fortunate to be an artist and is constantly excited by the prospect of creating paintings which push the barriers and make a contribution to the development of art.
