About the Hospice

Bury Hospice LogoBury Hospice is an independent registered charity delivering end-of-life care and support to terminally ill patients and their families, helping them to live and die with dignity.  The Hospice serves the metropolitan borough of Bury – Prestwich, Whitefield, Radcliffe, Bury, Tottington and Ramsbottom; and in its 19 year history, has provided care free of charge 24 hours a day, 365 days a year for nearly 4000 patients.

Bury Hospice admitted its first patients in 1991 and was originally designed and built to provide in-patient care. As treatments and needs have changed Bury Hospice has responded with developments and additional services.  Thus far, it has been possible to deliver these additional services through extension and reconfiguration of the existing premises.  However, further development and improvements are not physically possible at the Dumers Lane site.

Patient and NurseBury Hospice exists to provide specialised palliative care, helping patients and families facing terminal illness do so with dignity, independence, and free from pain.  This care is provided both in the hospice for day, out and inpatients and in patients’ own homes through our Hospice@Home service.

Much of the care provided to day and out patients is centred around helping patients come to terms with a terminal diagnosis, helping them to manage their symptoms and providing support, care and advice on spending what time they have left leading fulfilling and active lives.  Inpatient and Hospice@Home care tends to be focussed on patients’ final days and allows patients to spend precious time with their families around them whilst receiving specialised professional palliative care.

Other services provided include 24-hour professional advice, Consultant Out-Patient clinic, complementary therapies, counselling, medication checks, stress management and relaxation therapy sessions, home assessment visits, visitor support services, carer support, bereavement support and training and education.

All care across the whole range of Bury Hospice services is provided completely free of charge.  With only 16% of our annual funding coming from the NHS, the Hospice has gained a track record in securing the funds necessary to deliver all of these services through fundraising, shops and lottery, currently a figure of over £1.5 million every year!

Bury Hospice is a highly-regarded and well-loved organisation.  The care it provides is without exception of the highest standard and is utterly compassionate.  However, its inpatient unit of 5 beds is currently the smallest inpatient unit in the United Kingdom.  In order for us to care for larger numbers of people, we need to move to a new, larger site.

Artists representation of the new building for Bury HospiceTherefore, we have launched an exciting plan to build a bigger, better Hospice for Bury!  The new Hospice will be built on the site of the former St Bede’s Church on Rochdale Old Road in Bury.

The new, larger, better equipped Hospice would increase our in-patient bedrooms from five to 10 and would allow us to care for more people in different ways.

Plans for the new Hospice include:

  • 10 Generously sized fully equipped en-suite inpatient bedrooms, each with access to their own piece of terraced landscaped garden
  • Enhanced visitor accommodation for families who wish to stay with their loved ones
  • Purpose therapy suite and consultation rooms
  • Extensively landscaped gardens and a number of quiet areas
  • Increased catering facilities, enabling us to provide food for family members as well as in and day patients
  • Training facilities which will allow the Hospice to provide regular and on-going training for staff, other clinical professionals and students

We need to invest £5million to build, equip and open the new Hospice.  Having prudently set aside money, including two generous legacies, in a Development Fund over a number of years, we have £2.5 million and are now set to launch a fundraising campaign to help raise the remaining £2.5 million.
